Industry Talks at the Spring School 2015 Print

Henry Paul Bensler

From 1977 to 1984 Dr. Bensler studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA where he obtained a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He continued his studies in the area of two-phase fluid mechanics and graduated with a doctoral degree in 1990 from the National Polytechnical Institute of Grenoble, France.

After having worked for two years as an engine CFD-analyst at Renault Research in Paris, he switched to Volkswagen in the engine calculation group. In 1997, Dr. Bensler became manager of the CFD-engine group at Volkswagen Research. He is currently manager of the vehicle CAE-Methods group at VW Research and is responsible for the development of innovative simulation methods in the area of crash, aerodynamics, human safety and artificial intelligence.

Apart from his activities at Volkswagen, Dr. Bensler is active in committees and organizations in diverse roles, like Member of the Advisory Committee of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI): SIMVEC Congress - Simulation and Testing for Vehicle Development, and Vice Chairman of EUCAR - Strategic Pillar Group: Virtual Engineering.

e-Mobility: Current Status and Future Challenges

The automotive industry is currently searching for alternatives to the internal combustion engine as a means of propulsion. One of the promising technologies being considered is electro-mobility (e-mobility) based on Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

BEVs have the advantage of potentially reducing the production of CO2 when regenerative sources of electricity are used to recharge the battery; moreover, emissions are also dramatically reduced which can greatly improve the air quality in urban centers. BEVs, however, have the disadvantage of limited range compared to conventional powertrains and thus require special attention in order to satisfy potential drivers who are used to large ranges and the convenience of the current petroleum based fuel infrastructure.

This presentation will give an overview of the current status of e-mobility and discuss challenges currently being addressed to make e-mobility a viable alternative for future individual transportation.

I will conclude with general remarks about the nature of computing and advocate a deeper interaction and cross-fertilization with other more mature scientific disciplines.

Maximilian Ahrens

Maximilian Ahrens is a member of the executive board of Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange AG as well as founder and managing director of Zimory GmbH. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences for cloud technologies and trends.

He is co-founder of Zimory, a company providing carrier-grade cloud infrastructure software. Prior to that he served as a research scientist at the innovation development laboratory at Deutsche Telekom. Responsible for infrastructure and enterprise IT projects, spanning multiple divisions of Deutsche Telekom, Maximilian Ahrens is an expert on enterprise IT and business processes.

Before Deutsche Telekom, he led several business process reengineering projects for major German companies. Maximilian Ahrens studied Industrial Engineering at Berlin Technical University.

Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange – a new era of flexible infrastructure sourcing

In this presentation Maximilian Ahrens – Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange – will present the recently launched independent market place for Infrastructure Cloud offerings.

This marketplace strives to create a higher transparency and flexibility when it comes to procurement of infrastructure resources. Creating standardized products through a common admission, SLAs, legal frameworks and product performance standards does this. The platform is powered by the Cloud Orchestration technology of Zimory – the project partner within ASCENS, founded by Maximilian Ahrens.

Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange now sets forth to continue the product development to the next generation – including building an ecosystem of tools and applications that dynamically and potentially even autonomously handle the benefits of this distributed and large scale platform.

The presentation will guide through the offering as an introduction and then focus on the next generation requirements and opportunities.
